Description

4L60E / 4L65E Rebuilt Transmission Pump — 298mm, 6-7/8" Stator Tube, 0.100" O-Ring Surface

Complete rebuilt front pump assembly for GM two-piece-case 4L60E and 4L65E transmissions using the 298mm torque converter. This is the short-tube, non-LS version. If your unit uses the 300mm LS converter, you need the 7-3/8" stator tube pump instead — see the exclusions below before ordering.

Symptoms This Pump Addresses

  • Delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse, especially when cold
  • Low line pressure at idle, often below spec on a gauge test
  • Soft, flared, or slipping upshifts after a rebuild that used new frictions
  • Rising pump whine or moan that tracks engine RPM
  • Converter shudder or inconsistent TCC apply from unstable converter charge
  • Repeat 3-4 clutch failure caused by inadequate pressure and lube flow
  • Fluid aeration and foaming from a worn gear pocket or crescent
  • Front seal leakage traced to a worn or out-of-round stator bushing

Why The Pump Gets Overlooked

The pump generates every pound of pressure the transmission uses. When the gear-to-pocket clearance opens up, the stator bushing wears oval, or the sealing surfaces lose crush, the pump leaks internally. Pressure may still look acceptable at 2,000 RPM while falling short at idle — which is exactly why a freshly rebuilt 4L60E can still engage late, flare on the 1-2, and burn a new 3-4 pack.

Sonnax documents that an incorrect or misaligned stator can cause no movement, converter charge concerns, input shaft failure, and even converter damage. Getting the stator right is not a detail; it is the whole job.

⚠️ Before You Buy — Measure This

GM changed the pump body O-ring-to-rear-surface thickness during production. This pump has a 0.100" O-ring surface. Some units in this era use a thicker 0.160" surface, and the two are not interchangeable because the O-ring groove location differs and the case machining changed with it.

Measure your original pump body before ordering. Also confirm:

  1. Two-piece case — bell housing bolts on separately
  2. 6.5" bell housing depth with no bolt hole at 12 o'clock — a bolt hole at 12 o'clock means you have a 300mm LS unit
  3. 298mm torque converter
  4. Stator tube length 6-7/8" measured overall

❌ Does NOT Fit

  • Any 300mm Gen III LS application — uses the longer 7-3/8" stator tube
  • 1998–2002 Camaro / Firebird with LS1
  • 1997–2004 Corvette (C5)
  • 1999–2003 Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Avalanche, Escalade with 4.8L, 5.3L, or 6.0L V8
  • 1993–1996 one-piece-case 4L60E
  • 2004-up pumps that use no outer O-ring
  • Input Speed Sensor (ISS) style pumps, stator casting 075 or 672
  • 4L70E, 4L75E, 4L80E, 4L85E
  • Pumps requiring the 0.160" O-ring surface

Identification Reference

Two-piece-case 13-vane pumps in this range are commonly found with:

  • Stator casting: 611 or 705
  • Pump body casting: 073 or 555
  • Boost valve sleeve: 2.100" overall length
  • Stator tube: 6-7/8" overall (298mm applications)

Because these castings span more than one variant, the O-ring surface measurement is the deciding check. Sonnax also publishes a fast visual method: draw a line through the centers of the pump bolt holes and note whether the converter feed hole sits left or right of that line, then check whether the stator's converter feed and lube holes are in line with each other or offset.

Installation Notes

Pump replacement requires the transmission to be removed and the torque converter pulled. The pump must be aligned to the case before the bolts are drawn to final torque, or the input shaft will run off-center and destroy the bushing.

Additional items required, sold separately:

  • Pump-to-case gasket
  • Front pump seal
  • Converter O-ring / seal
  • Fresh ATF to fill capacity

Professional installation is recommended.

🔧 Add Lubegard Platinum Universal ATF Protectant

A rebuilt pump deserves protected fluid. Lubegard Platinum Universal ATF Protectant helps control oxidation, shear, and heat breakdown in 4L60E units that see towing, hauling, or stop-and-go duty — the exact conditions that wore out the pump you're replacing. Add one bottle at refill. Bundle it with this pump and start the rebuild right.
