1988 to 2007 Dodge, Ram and Jeep vehicles fitted with the small case transmissions such as the A500, 40RH, 42RH, 40RE, 42RE, 44RE or with the big case transmission such as the A518, 46RH, 46RE, A618, 47RH, 47RE and 48RE automatic transmission often come in with faded overdrive direct clutch springs as well as burnt overdrive direct clutch plates.

This spring is used to apply the overdrive direct clutch. Once it fades, clamping force is reduced, directly compromising the holding ability of the overdrive direct clutch. This leads to complaints of slipping or no reverse, reduced or no coast braking in manual 2nd or 1st gear as well as burned up overdrive direct clutch plates.
