About This Part This vacuum modulator mounts to the transmission case and uses a single vacuum line to sense engine load, adjusting transmission line pressure so the A4LD shifts firmly under acceleration and softly at light throttle. A torn or worn modulator diaphragm is a common cause of harsh, delayed, or erratic shifts, failure to reach overdrive, or a hard bang into gear.
