What This Part Does
The intermediate sprag is the one-way clutch that provides holding in third gear inside the Ford 5R55N 5-speed automatic. When the elements wear or break, the usual complaints are no third or fourth gear, slipping under load, or a bind on the upshift. This assembly includes 19 sprag elements plus a new outer race, so the entire wear pair is replaced together rather than dropping fresh elements into a scored race.

Important: the 5R55W and 5R55S use a different one-way clutch arrangement. Confirm your transmission tag reads 5R55N before ordering.

Installation Notes
Install with the recess facing down and the flat side toward the hub. Check for free rotation one direction and firm lockup the other before final assembly. While the unit is apart, inspect the intermediate clutch pack, intermediate band, and intermediate servo, as sprag failure often leaves debris and heat damage behind.
